日本からは320種類の蝶が報告され、そのうち250種が日本に定着しています。日本の固有種は、ギフチョウ、オキナワカラスアゲハ、ヤマトスジグロシロチョウ、リュウキュウウラナミジャノメ、ヤエヤマウラナミジャノメ、マサキウラナミジャノメ、リュウキュウヒメジャノメ、ヒカゲチョウ、サトキマダラヒカゲ、ヒメウラギンヒョウモン、アサマイチモンジ、ウラキンシジミ、フジミドリシジミ、エゾミドリシジミ、ミヤマカラスシジミ、オガサワラシジミ、オガサワラセセリ、アサヒナキマダラセセリの18種が知られています。また、ヒサマツミドリシジミ、キリシマミドリシジミ、フタオチョウは、国外の個体群とは独立した別種である可能性が指摘されている。
A total of 320 species of butterflies have been reported in Japan, of which 250 species are established in the country. The endemic butterfly species in Japan include the Japanese Luehdorfia, Papillio Okinawensis, Artogeia napi, Ypthima riukiuana, Ypthima yaeyamana, Ypthima masakii, Mycalesis madjicosa, Lethe sicelis, Neope goschkevitschii, Fabriciana kunikanei, Limenitis glorifica, Ussuriana stygiana, Sibataniozephyrus fujisanus, Favonius jezoensis, Strymonidia mera, Celastrina ogasararaensis, Parnara ogasawaraensis, and Ochlodes asahinai, totaling 18 species. Additionally, it has been suggested that Chrysozephyrus hisamatsusanus, Chrysozephyrus ataxus, and Polyura eudamippus may be distinct species independent from the populations found abroad.
