Japan is long and narrow from north to south, spanning from the subarctic to the subtropical zones, and its insect fauna is remarkably interesting and rich. The number of species is believed to rival that of all of Europe and may reach about 60-70% of that found in North America. Currently, approximately 32,000 species have been recorded in Japan, but it is estimated that the actual number may exceed 100,000 species.
